The Weekly Interval

Weekly Interval #1:
Augmented Unison (minor 2nd)

Posted on: January 27th, 2011 by dville
Welcome to The Weekly Interval, your online ear training home.  I’ll post a new sound clip of the week’s interval and the name of a song or two where the interval can be found.  Practice the interval throughout the week.  Try playing it in different areas of the fingerboard and in different keys.  Sing the associated solfege syllables as you play the interval.  If you hear any songs come into your head while practicing the interval please enter the title in the comments section.  Wear the interval out, so you’ll never forget the sound of it when it comes around in a tune.  These are the building blocks of music, get them into your ears.

For twelve weeks we will ascend the C Chromatic Scale.  Then, for the following twelve weeks we will get to know the descending intervals.  Let’s begin our trip through the intervals with the shortest interval, the half-step or semi-tone, from C to C# (Db).  Listen to the tension and suspense of this interval.  Why do you think they used it for the theme to Jaws?

Ascending Minor 2nd: C to C#
(Also known as Augmented Unison)
Solfege Syllables: Do-Di (pronounced Doe-Dee)
Open 3rd string to 3rd string, 1st fret
First two notes of:
Chromatic Scale
Theme from Jaws
Miserlou
Nice Work If You Can Get It
Bye, Bye, Blackbird
