Weekly Interval #14: Descending Major 2nd

Posted on: January 14th, 2011 by dville

This week’s guest on the Weekly Interval is the descending Major 2nd. It’s a funky interval going from the octave to the flatted 7th note of the C Major Scale.  Play the interval on your instrument. Listen to it. Spend a week with this interval, play it in different keys, different areas of the different area of the neck and listen for the melodies of familiar songs to jump out as you practice listening to the descending major 2nd. If you do hear the melody to a song that starts with this interval other than those listed below post it in the comments section.

Key of C: Octave C to Bb
Solfege Syllables: Do-Tay (pronounced Doe-Tay)
1st string, 3rd fret to 1st string, 1st fret
First two notes of (not necessarily C to Bb):

Deck the Halls (with boughs of Holly)

  2. Gerry says:

Jim , T think this should be 1ST string 3rd fret to 1st string 1st fret. Going up it was called Lee (Asc Maj6).
Does it change names on the way down?

    Thanks, Gerry
