Weekly Interval #18: Descending #4/b5

Posted on: January 10th, 2011 by dville

This week’s guest on the Weekly Interval is the descending #4/b5 (sharp 4/flat 5). We are now halfway down the scale and once again we come upon the interval of the Tri-Tone (an interval of three whole steps. Our ears aren’t particularly enamored with this sound, hence of the lack of tunes that begin with this interval. Play the interval on your instrument. Listen to it. Spend a week with this interval, play it in different keys, different areas of the major scale and listen for the melodies of familiar songs to jump out as you practice listening to the descending #4/b5. If you do hear the melody to a song that starts with this interval other than those listed below post it in the comments section.

Key of C: Octave C to Gb
Solfege Syllables: Do-Say (pronounced Doe-Say)
1st string, 3rd fret to 2nd string, 2nd fret
First two notes of:
Tri-Tone Interval
The Simpsons
