This week the 3 Chord Club is blue, as in The Blues. Most blues music has only three chords and that’s what we live for!
Each Friday we choose three songs from a specific artist, label or genre of music that we’ll learn by ear. All the songs will contain three chords or less! You’ll find links to the lyrics but not the chords. That’s where your ears come in. Since you know the song only has one to three chords, try to figure out the changes, or chord progression by ear. Here’s a hint, most of the time the chords will be the I-IV & V or V7 chords. In the Key of C, that’s C-F-G or G7. Remember, the sound examples may be in various keys. For bonus ear training, try to figure out the original key!
Our selections are three blues classics. From the father of delta blues Robert Johnson, comes I Got Rambling On My Mind performed by Eric Clapton. Big Joe Williams covers his own composition Baby, Please Don’t Go and Howlin’ Wolf knocks down a version of Willie Dixon’s Little Red Rooster. For added fun, try figuring out a lick or two by ear.
