3 Chord Club: The Bee Gees

Posted on: July 22nd, 2011 by dville
This week add your voice to the wonderful three-part harmonies of The Bee Gees here at the 3 Chord Club.  It was impossible to find any three-chord songs by the group so we are treated to a two-chord song and a couple of interesting Bonus Chord songs.  You’ll find, however, the two songs with the bonus chords are basically the I-IV-V structure with slight alterations.

Each Friday we choose three songs from a specific artist, label or genre of music that we’ll learn by ear. All the songs will contain three chords or less (with the exception of Bonus Chord songs)! You’ll find links to the lyrics but not the chords. That’s where your ears come in. Since you know the song has only one to three chords, try to figure out the changes, or chord progression by ear while watching the YouTube video. Here’s a hint, most of the time the chords will be the I-IV & V or V7 chords. In the Key of C, that’s C-F-G or G7. Remember, the sound examples may be in various keys. As an added bonus, try to figure out the key of the recording.  I’ve included the original key information at the bottom of this post so don’t look if you want the challenge.

You Should Be Dancing (lyrics in video)
(Hint: i minor & iv minor)
(Hint: Bonus Chord v minor)

To Love Somebody (lyrics)
(Hint: Bonus/Bonus Chords: ii minor & bVII)

Extra Credit Hints:

You Should Be Dancing:  Key of G minor (Chords Used: G minor & C minor)
I Can’t See Nobody: Key of A (Chords Used: E minor-D-A-E) Starts on E minor to IV to I to V in verse.  Chorus I-IV-V-I.
To Love Somebody: Key of A (Chords Used: A-B minor-D-G-E) Basically a I-IV-V song using the ii minor and flat VII chords as transition chords.
