Weekly Interval #12: Ascending Perfect 8th (Octave)

Posted on: January 16th, 2011 by dville

This week’s guest on the Weekly Interval is the ascending Perfect 8th. We have now traveled from C to shining C! The Perfect 8th is also known as the interval of an octave and is probably the most familiar interval to our ears.  Play the interval on you instrument. It’s a very confident sounding isn’t it?. Spend a week with this interval, play it in different keys, and listen for the melodies of familiar songs to jump out as you practice listening to the ascending Perfect 8th. If you do hear the melody to a song that starts with this interval other than those listed below post it in the comments section.  Remember also, you can play any of these intervals in any key! They will have the same general characteristics, the only thing that will change is the names of the notes in the interval and their pitch, either higher or lower than the key of C.

Key of C: C to C (One Octave higher)
Solfege Syllables: Do-Do (pronounced Doe-Doe)
Open 3rd string to 1st string, 3rd fret
First two notes of:
The Christmas Song (Chest-nuts…)
Over The Rainbow
Let It Snow

Whoops. I see Somewhere Over the Rainbow is already on the list. Darn.
