Play Ukulele By Ear, in conjunction with Kala Ukuleles, will be donating 45 pitch pipes to the Cal-Mum 5th Grade Ukulele Club in Caledonia, New York. The club is organized each year at the school by fellow uker Mr. Kyle Leonard.
Many of the students now use electronic tuners, which does nothing to help their ears become familiar with the four most popular notes in all of Ukuleledom: G C E A. In an effort to correct this, each student will be given a pitch pipe and taught how to use it. At the end of the school year we’ll find out from Mr. Leonard how well the students did tuning with the pitch pipes and if using the pitch pipes helped their over-all musicality.
That'll be an interesting experiment. I can see the advantage in having them tune by ear at home. But I feel sorry for them if they're not going to be allowed their electronic tuners in the classroom.
