So how does this Play Ukulele By Ear approach work? By attaching an emotional quality to each chord, your ears start to relate to the sound of each chord in a different way, like listening to the voice of a friend or loved one. Next we start with the most basic chord progressions, from one chord on up, and learn how the different types of chords i.e. major, minor, dominant 7th etc., sound in these sequences we call songs.
This is where the magic comes in! By practicing common chord progressions in this fashion your ears start to hear songs your ears are already familiar with. That’s when the light bulb comes on! You are not learning one song at a time from the sheet music, you are learning about every song that shares that particular chord progression.
Here’s what just happened to Andy from Berkeley, California. “Hi Jim, I just finished watching, then watching some more, of your Play Ukulele By Ear Vol. 2. Amazing what you can learn. I found several songs I’ve been wanting to learn and didn’t know I already knew them! It’s a great DVD. Thanks!
A lot of the music we want to learn on the ukulele is already stored in our heads. The trick is to practice the patterns that unlock the sounds we already know.
