3 Chord Club: Robert Zimmerman

Posted on: October 15th, 2010 by dville

Minnesota’s own Robert Zimmerman (aka Bob Dylan) is visiting the 3 Chord Club today. We’ll learn three songs from Bob’s vast catalog by ear.

Each Friday we choose three songs from a specific artist, label or genre of music that we’ll learn by ear. All the songs will contain three chords or less! You’ll find links to the lyrics but not the chords. That’s where your ears come in. Since you know the song has only one to threechords, try to figure out the changes, or chord progression by ear. Here’s a hint, most of the time the chords will be the I-IV & V or V7 chords. In the Key of C, that’s C-F-G or G7. Remember, the sound examples may be in various keys. As an added bonus try, to figure out what key the original is played in. Remember, in a lot of folk music, the V Major is used in place of the V7 chord.

Blowin’ In The Wind (lyrics)
(Hint: I-IV-V-I/Watch Joan’s left hand)

It Take A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry (lyrics)
(Hint: Hangs on I at beginning of each verse)

All Along The Watchtower (lyrics)
(Hint: vi-V-IV-V)
