3 Chord Club: Lee Dorsey

Posted on: October 14th, 2011 by dville
Let’s get down and get funky this week at the 3 Chord Club as we sing three 1960’s R & B hits from the late, great Lee Dorsey.  Two of the three songs this week only have two chords, which leaves you more time to concentrate on playing some funky strum than worrying about chord changes!

Each Friday we choose three songs from a specific artist, label or genre of music that we’ll learn by ear. All the songs will contain three chords or less! You’ll find links to the lyrics but not the chords. That’s where your ears come in. Since you know the song only has one to three chords, try to figure out the changes, or chord progression by ear. Here’s a hint, most of the time the chords will be the I-IV & V or V7 chords. In the Key of C, that’s C-F-G or G7. Remember, the sound examples may be in various keys. For bonus ear training, try to figure out the original key!

Ya-Ya-lyrics
(Hint: Blues)

Ride Your Pony-lyrics
(Hint: I-IV-I)

Workin’ In A Coal Mine-lyrics
(Hint: Chorus all I)

Hi Jim,Is the recording of "Ride Your Pony" in the Key of Eb? If so, are the chords then Eb and Ab? I think so, but want to check. Thanks!

  2. Jim D'Ville says:

Eb and Ab are correct! I posted this about a year ago before I added the original key hints. Thanks for visiting!
